 Dear Reader
So, dear Reader, ‘A New Day is beginning...’, and first of all we’d like to offer you our warmest wishes for a New Year filled with blessings, and to thank you from the bottom of our heart for all the greetings cards and encouraging letters you’ve sent us recently.
A material reflection
We’ve really tried to make this Review a material reflection (though obviously a pale one) of this shower of blessings we hope will come your way in 2001. This month’s book selection seems to have turned out to be an exceptionally varied and readable one, and you should just look at the prices....!
A more spiritual reflection!
We were thinking the other day about a friend who died a few years ago at the age of ninety-something. He used to sit in his tiny room at the old people’s home and say how he wished he could be of service to others. He had the idea that, because his legs didn’t support him any more, and he was pretty deaf and so on, he couldn’t really be of use to his fellow human beings.
If only he could have seen himself as we saw him! He’d made his whole life a prayer, and that had filled him with such a radiance that it was perfectly visible even to our physical eyes. And even now, we have only to remember his eyes, and his wonderful smile, to be filled with happiness.
So he helped us, and goes on helping us, even though he didn’t consciously ‘do’ a single thing. In fact, you know, we are very fortunate because we have met a number of people like that, who – after a lifetime of loving and serving as best they can – are so filled with light that you can see it.
And just to think of them makes us feel uplifted, even if they are not aware of doing a single thing to help us, and even if we don’t speak to each other for months at a time! So that’s a different way of thinking about how to help others, isn’t it? It doesn’t necessarily have to be something you ‘do’, at all. It can just be something you ‘are’!
