2006 Issue 11: A LITTLE LIGHT ON MANTRAS

Dear Friends,

Mantras are sacred sounds which vibrate in the cosmos at a very high frequency. They call in extraordinarily powerful energies and activate your spiritual centres.

When two or more people sing or chant together, the resonance brings them together physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. While families, groups and communities sing together they all come into harmony.

Because sound creates frequencies which can harmonise or fracture, many teenagers prefer discordant music which reflects their state. But higher vibrations dissolve lower ones and enable everyone to resonate at a more spiritual level.

Amma, the hugging mother, has an ashram in Kerala, India. When I stayed there for a few weeks, we would always rise early to listen to the swamis with their rich chocolate voices, chanting the 1008 names of God. We could literally feel it bringing us into divine alignment for the day.

Jonathan Goldman in his book, Healing Sounds, tells the story of a Benedictine Monastery where the monks chanted for six to eight hours a day. When a new abbot felt this was unproductive and stopped the practice, all the monks became tired and depressed. Doctors prescribed various cures, including a change from their vegetarian diet, to no avail. At last it was suggested they return to their daily Gregorian chanting. It had an immediate therapeutic effect, for once it was re-established the monks were happily able to continue their rigorous schedule of work and prayer.

I can personally attest to the power of mantra for transformation and manifestation. As I chanted mantras with some friends I could feel the vibrations tuning me up. They recommended Thomas Ashley-Farrand's book, Healing Mantras, in which he discusses the use of mantra and clearly lays out specific ones for particular purposes. The book includes a really helpful free CD. He says, 'Mantra is a wonderfully effective complementary spiritual practice that can enrich your life.'

So I decided to do his suggested forty-day spiritual discipline. I asked for angelic help, wrote down what I wished to manifest and dedicated it for the highest good. Then I chose certain mantras from his book and chanted them for forty days morning and evening. It was fabulous.

When it was finished I realised I had more internal blocks and beliefs to release. As Ganesha is the Hindu God for removal of obstacles, I chose to chant 25,000 of the Om Gum Ganapatayei Swaha mantra. I found it soothing to walk in my local woods or on the beach, repeating the words silently to myself. It really helped to still my mind. When I finished this I undertook the Camino, the five hundred mile sacred pilgrimage route across Spain for seven weeks. Because it was a spiritual journey, my companion and I walked in silence, so I was able to chant my mantra for several hours a day! We also chanted aloud together for half an hour.

Over the next few weeks it was as if an invisible brick wall between me and the fulfilment of my dreams fell down in whole areas of my life, personal and business. My entire life changed gear. I was awed.

People often ask me how to help their children. The chanting of mantras for them sends them a beautiful vibration. Mantras soothe and support the soul before conception and during pregnancy as well as after birth. When my daughter's second child was due I arrived at their house to look after two year old Isabel while my daughter went into hospital for the birth. The baby was overdue. Lauren's first labour had lasted for thirty six hours and she was already very tired, so we decided to chant the Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya mantra. We dedicated it to the baby arriving soon and to a short safe labour. As we chanted the energy in the room was extraordinary. Three hours later Lauren went into labour and, less than four hours after that, Finn arrived safe and sound.

Her partner Greg said to me, 'The energy that poured through on that night as we chanted, just hours before Finn was born, was amazing and clearly linked, as if he was responding to the mantra.'
