2007 Issue 03: THOUGHTS BECOME THINGS

For more than twenty years, Geoff and I were involved in one of those human dramas that so often give rise to heartache. As with many people, our natural inclination was to worry and fret about the problem, and generally try to sort it out by focusing on it. However, as students of universal law, we were also aware of how important it is to purify one’s thoughts and focus on the positive, rather than the negative, because what we think about attracts experiences into our lives. On the other hand, we knew how important it was to be absolutely honest with ourselves, and not repress difficult or unpleasant emotions. We were conscious of how fine a line there can sometimes be between ‘positive thinking’ and simple repression, and - naive though we may have been - we didn’t want to stray onto the wrong side of it!

Well, the outcome was that - in between bouts of affirming our faith in the ultimate perfect outcome - we often gave in to an almost irresistible compulsion to think and talk about the situation, driven by the idea that, if only we were able to think long enough, or hard enough, we might find a solution, or at least an understanding of why things were happening that way. However, we couldn’t fail to notice how, the more we talked and thought about what was happening, and felt miserable about it, the worse it became.

Well, all things must pass, and eventually, so did that difficult situation, but I sometimes wish we had understood the Law of Attraction better while it was all going on, because I’m sure that then, things would have been very different. However, what wonderful lessons we learned! And we wouldn’t change that for the world!

Seeing the Light
So.... we actually continued in our divided state of mind, with one foot in the ‘positive thinking’ camp, and the other in the ‘tell it like it is’ camp until quite recently, when we went away for a week’s holiday - equipped with a large box of edifying books including Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret - with the intention of fully placing our trust in the Law of Attraction, and cleaning up our thought-life once and for all!

Well, if you’ve seen the film of The Secret, you’ll no doubt remember Mike Dooley’s immortal words, which he pronounces as though in huge italics:

‘thoughts.... become.... things’.

And you’ll remember how clearly the film explains that, if you keep on thinking about what you don’t want, then what you don’t want is what you are going to get. So it’s a much better idea to think instead about what you do want! And you’ll remember that beautiful, redeeming idea, that our positive thoughts are much, much stronger than our negative ones, because we live in a universe which is essentially benign. And finally the concept that the universe gives us instant feedback about whether or not our thoughts are going in a helpful direction, by means of our feelings!

Well, we’d heard these things dozens of times before, but this time something just clicked. We saw the light!!! Suddenly it seemed really easy to think and feel positively about our past, our present and our future. Our doubts just evaporated, particularly the doubt - which I think a lot of people have - that somehow we may be intended by the universe or God to suffer; that our sufferings may be there to teach us something, or they may be ‘God’s will’. I remember once talking to a friend about how I felt that, in my life, I had to live by the words ‘thy will be done’. And she said, ‘But Ann, if God were standing here right now, do you know what he would say?’ And she took hold of my hand and said, ‘Ann, what do YOU want?’. That shook me to the core, and I thought about it for years afterwards.

Since then I’ve come to the conclusion that, as I am made ‘in the image and likeness of the divine’, my will - my deepest, heart’s desire - and ‘God’s’ will, are not actually so very different. In fact, why would they not be the same?

What do we truly want?
Which brings me to my next point. There is a lot of talk, among those who are just beginning to understand the Law of Attraction, about attracting into our lives things like ‘a fantastic Mercedes’, or 1001 other consumer items. But I think that if a person is truly aware of themselves as part of the divine being, (which is the inner state you need to be in if you want work with the Law of Attraction in the right way), then they will be as much aware of the Whole, of the Oneness, as they are of themselves as an individuality. And therefore they will not want things that could hurt the Whole, which includes all the creatures on this planet and our wonderful Earth herself. So why would they want a petrol-guzzling Mercedes? Why not want a vehicle that runs on environmentally-friendly energy instead? If we all did that, now that would get the car manufacturers moving! And why stop there? We could go further and ask the Universe for a means of getting from place to place that did not involve vast swathes of Mother Earth being smothered in tarmac!

Another point we want to make is that, if we accept the Law of Attraction as fact, then we must also accept that the future is not created or planned in advance by some external agency. It is created from our very own thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions in the present moment. Therefore we are the ones who get to decide what happens in the future, and not any outside force or energy, however exalted. An external energy may offer opportunities or tendencies, but it cannot actually determine what we do with them. We are the only ones who can do that. So we have great power, if we did but know it, and we should use it - as Alberto Villoldo writes in The Four Insights - to envision and create a future that is joyful, harmonious, peaceful and healthful for Earth and all her creatures.

Of course there may be times when our envisioning seems difficult - after all, we have got our entire collective conditioning to slice through - but those are the times when we can support each other, and reach out for the support of the universe, which comes to us in all sorts of unexpected ways (including books, I have to say!). And we should never forget that we have reality on our side, for the universe, with its integral laws of harmony and goodwill, is far more real and true than all our collective delusions and their quasi-creations will ever be.

The future is made from the present
And now we would like to share something that we feel deeply, encouraged by what William Bloom has written. A lot of people at the moment are concerned about prophecies regarding the year 2012, and some authors are feeding a sense of fear with dire predictions of catastrophe and destruction. This - to us - is to misuse the creative power of thought, imagination and belief in the most serious way. ‘Thoughts become things.’ Are future situations of mass suffering and destruction seriously what we want our thoughts to become? Of course not!!! Rather, let us - like two of the titles on 2012 we feature - 2012: The Year of the Mayan Prophecy and 2013 Oracle - support an awareness that the universal energies at this time are building towards an era of unprecedented opportunity for enlightenment and peace. It simply remains for us to align ourselves - in thought, word and especially deed - with these energies, and the future will be brighter than we could possibly imagine. If this is what we truly want, then I am quite sure we can have it. As Chris Thomas said at the end of his article in our last magazine, ‘We really are that strong.’

With love, Ann, Geoff and the Cygnus Team
