 Dear Friends
Over the past summer months, the blessing of each new dawning day has been made even more special for me by the sight of a family of swifts that chose the security under the eaves of my roof to call home. The cycle of moving in, mating, nesting, and the resulting demands of bringing up a family have all happened in a relatively short period of time.
My alarm clock became redundant as the morning air filled with hungry cries from the nest. As the weeks went on I witnessed the cautious ‘maiden flights’ of the offspring; both blissful and painful to watch, often I wondered who would live to tell the tale! Now each morning they perform amazing flights of speed and dexterity, both supporting and testing each other. Time and experiences move on so quickly: the strains of sibling rivalries have relaxed, lessons learned, and strong individuals have emerged. Parents and offspring now fly together as equals, the wisdom of age blending with the youthful spirit of adventure.
One morning soon I know they will have gone, flying to warmer climates: for some, a new land of unforeseen opportunity, for others the comfort of a re-connection. Maybe not all will return next spring, but the instinct within cannot be denied, and whatever the cost they must leave. I ponder their future, grateful and blessed to have witnessed their birthplace.
My thoughts turn to my own family and my place at the centre of a ‘brother sandwich’. That is not to say ‘a rose between two thorns’(!), more that their sibling role lead me eventually to honour my own identity. My family life was a gift in so many ways and it was also the platform for setting up patterns for my future understanding; patterns that have been both blessings and perhaps some of the hardest challenges of all. That’s family life for you – perfect in its imperfection.
In your family where is your position? Did you receive the family you hoped for? Did your family help you find or lose your sense of self? Were you denied the connection of family in some way? As a parent were you able to provide the family life you wished to create? Circumstances are endless; so many facets to one diamond.
Learning the message of family life whilst within the close confines of the family is an almost impossible task, and it is often only as we travel further along the path of life that we become aware of the original ‘teaching’ experience. By this time many circumstances will have changed, the opportunity to talk with those who shared so much may have been denied, and acts of love or forgiveness granted or denied. It is both a wise and courageous heart that can open and free all parties from the limiting connections held together by pain from past trauma. Initially it may be a step too far to expect ourselves to be able to ‘love thyself’ and others without judgement. An easier route to future freedom may be to come to ‘know thyself’.
There is much growing awareness of our planetary need to become part of a global family, but – as with our own family – a sense of personal awareness is needed before we can take up the demands of a wider community. To know thyself will be transformational, resulting in the ability to love thyself. This is the requirement of us all if this global family is to reside on earth, creating a happy home. Loving family as thy neighbour, as thyself, will be the crowning jewel at the centre of your heart. To find within each of us that sacred space that has been in existence before any family patterning, social grooming, earthly experience or layering took place is where the heart of eternal wisdom lies.
We are more than our name, title, occupation, rank or social position. Stripping away all that labels or roles mean to us can help reveal who we truly are.
An exercise
In your own time and place of safety find space to explore and discover the freedom that lies deep within. As you are able to remove the layers of living, you create a birthplace awaiting a new awareness to fill the void.
At this point it may be helpful to take up your journal, or a piece of paper at the top of which are written the words: Who Is.......? (Put your name in the space.)
Whatever words you choose to continue the story with will assist in discovering the real you. At your centre lies an amazing, crystal-clear inner light that has been within since the beginning of creation, and which so deserves to shine. No earthly experience can extinguish it, however dull it may appear. You belong to the world of miracles; they stand before you in shining splendour next to every dream of pain and suffering.
I wish you joy on your journey of inner discovery. Don`t delay! The earth mother and the global family await you, and the unique and special gift that is who you truly are.
