March 2008: The Meaning of Life

Memories
For just a little while we have the power,
Given at the moment of our birth,
To manifest the care of the Creator
Upon these darkly shadowed plains of earth.
Only for the spanning of a lifetime,
Be that long, or tiny-heartbeat short,
We may touch the essence of another
And gift away the love which we have brought.
With passing years, the soul may not remember
Those larger realms, eternal and divine
From whence it came. And be content to linger
And feast on coarser bread and lesser wine.
Thus we may use up the hours and minutes,
The days and months of our allotted time,
Wrapped within a dark cocoon of doing,
Doubting there's a reason in the rhyme.
Until some yearning, shuttered by the senses,
Breaks illusion's bonds, to rise in flight,
Awakening a deep subconscious knowing
That all are One, and Life is Love and Light.

The Meaning of Life is....
Due to a profoundly unhappy childhood with detrimental effects continuing well into adulthood, I've had many a cause to ask, plead, scream at God, the universe – everything, for answers to life's mystery.

As a child, I questioned God daily, angrily demanding to know 'Who am I? What am I for? Where am I? Why?' I asked from my heart with all my might, humbled by intense emotional pain and neglect.

I pondered the stars, yearning to be encompassed by beauty and light instead of dense fog down here. Amazingly, the stars eventually met me halfway, giving me visual and audible experiences that motivated inside me elements of hope and purpose.

One memorable angst-ridden night I saw a circle of golden light, and in it two ethereal androgynous figures – adult and child, smiling, apparently in happy recognition, exuding great warmth and happiness for each other and me. They were familiar, yet beyond recall.

I heard: 'To know love is your only purpose and reason. To find love on earth and feel it is your hearts desire. Be sure to recognise it where it exists and don't let it pass you by. With love reciprocated all questions are answered, your worries dissolved. Once love is experienced you'll know life's meaning – everything will just fall into place and be understood. Remember this, God bless'.

These words and images live with me, encouraging and inspiring me on life's long and winding path. A very personal experience, but one I believe to be worthy of sharing.

Contentment
Laid on his back in a field of corn,
Basked a cute little rabbit, his body so warm,
His body content, he let his soul soar,
Above the clouds and into the ever-more.

As he thought to himself…………

‘Although I am me,
I am also part of everything that I see,
My tiny soft body may seem very small,
But my consciousness encapsulates all.

Above the earth my soul flies free,
Past, present, future, nothing’s hidden from me,
As I cleanse myself in peace, joy and love,
Then may I return to earth from above.

And pray that life’s lessons may not seem so hard,
Because I know that heaven is closer than my back yard,
And when I wish, I can return there,
For new strength to deal with my every-day care’.

Something of Value
Many of us, at some stage in our lives, seek to discover the meaning of life. Often the question arises as a response to some cataclysmic disturbance to our well-being, be it of an emotional, mental, spiritual or physical nature. For many, to be able to understand why things happen to us is an essential quest. How we pursue the answer is, of course, down to us.

I remember, many years ago, wallowing in a morass of emotional, mental and spiritual self-pity asking why was this happening to me? A very dear friend was on hand to offer comfort.

He said, ‘What I am about to say might not take the pain of loss away but one day you may reconsider these words. For every perceived hideous experience that we undergo in life, we must draw something of value. If we do not, then the whole experience has been a waste of time.’

He was right. It did not relieve the pain but I did reconsider his words. I have come to understand that the whole purpose of incarnation into the physical realm of existence, is to experience and through that experience, to learn – learning being an essential vehicle for the individual personality to spiritually evolve.

How simple is that? Pretty simple. The trick is living it.

The Most Empowering Statement
I believe 'I don't know' is the most empowering statement I can make. When I know I don't know I can create a space for knowing in that moment. The knowing that can enter the space I create is from the All in All – the Oneness of All That Is, which totally supports me and, of course, you because it knows and loves us as ONE.

For me 'I don't know' is such a relief! At last I can relax into not knowing anything! In this beautiful, peaceful, joyful, light space 'knowing' gently arrives into being and often starts doing things which surprise and delight me. I find myself writing this – how lovely.

I don't know what this 'knowing' will be or do next and I really don't need to know. I can let go, relax and totally trust that whatever it is, or isn't, it is for my highest good (happiness) and the highest good of all concerned. I am experiencing Heaven on Earth.

Thank you God, with love from Lynn Thoume

The Root
The meaning of life can be found in the leaning of life to the light
From the chaos and darkness of soil, the wisdom of seed sets its sight
Through landscape of moon-tide and earthquake, through rainbow of sunshine
and rain
Consciousness silently watches cells dividing, again and again
Awareness lands and settles to sip nectar from the heart of a flower
But the butterfly wings of attention can never endure the full hour
Whilst life lives itself ever changing, every leaf, every bud every shoot
Gives meaning to life when we realise, it can only evolve from one root
Annie Cousins

Loving
In the film 'Ghost' the hero turns to enter the next life leaving Molly, his girlfriend, behind. His last words to her were 'The love, Molly. You take it with you'.

The only possession he could bring with him to the next life was the love he had given away. It would seem that the meaning of life lies in loving, to give away as much love as you can.

No matter what your job or vocation in life is, whether you are a shop assistant or an airline pilot, a bus driver or an architect, life will be full of meaning for you, if you love what you do. But if there's no love in your life and you are working just for worldly gain of some sort then life may be meaningless. One of the greatest sources of joy is where people care and show love for their neighbour without discrimination.

Put love into the most mundane task and it is the most meaningful undertaking in the whole world. You don't have to do great deeds, you just have to do the tiniest deed with great emphasis on love.

Two men building a wall on a building site were asked what they were making. One said a wall, the other said 'a cathedral'.

The Apple Tree
Just on the edge, 'twixt the footpath and quay,
There grows an old fruit-bearing gnarled apple tree.
Unpruned and neglected, each year I behold
Its bounteous baubles, those apples of gold -
They taste like no other, the fragrance is sweet
Either picked from the bough or dropped on the street.
But planners are here and in their mind's eye
Are homes to be built and the apple may die.
If this is to be, and the tree is ripped out
I pray that a bird spreads the pips all about,
Pips that will grow into New Life, a tree
Like the one of the edge 'twixt the footpath and quay.

Dear Cygnus,
I do truly send my love to this tree, but if it is to be sacrificed, then the Meaning of Life will go on as re-birth in its widely scattered pips, and who can tell how far and wide the birds will fly to achieve this?

Elemental
Somewhere, within the very deepest deep of me,
Guarded by the beating of my heart,
There glows a tiny flickering of knowing
That I'm a tiny spark, a living part
Of all this great, pulsating, shining cosmos,
Where energies vibrate and change and grow
In cavalcades of make-believe and magic.
An ever new and never ending show.

A tapestry of light and sound and colour,
Growing and evolving with each strand,
Following a blueprint which could only
Spring from some Divine Creative Hand.
And yet ... and here's the marvel, here's the wonder...
In all this vast, amazing panoply,
Each single soul is cherished and beloved
And held in All That Is, and is to be.

I AM
As I sit in the silence with the question 'Why am I here?'
I hear these words clearly... To dissolve all your fear.
I AM there in the Oneness you try to disguise
In the illusion of matter you see through your eyes
I AM there in the hatred and sorrow and pain
I AM there in your seasons, sunshine and rain
I AM there in injustice, in famine and war
I AM there when you cry 'I can't take anymore'
I AM there in the hunger of famine torn places
Sorrow and heartache etched on desperate faces
I AM the Presence amidst all of this pain
In the fighting for power and material gain
I AM the watcher in a billion disguises
Making my way through each one of your vices
I AM the stillness you carry within
The Peace you will find when you silence the din
I AM the seeker searching for truth
Reading this, learning that but still wanting more proof
I AM the sinner and saint all in one
There is no division
I AM... WE ARE...ONE
This is the meaning you seek from your soul
You are here to awaken.... this is your goal
