If you have been blessed with an animal coming into your life through dreams, meditation or in reality, then pay particular attention to the animals’ behaviour, for it conveys a multitude of meanings.
The position or the action reveals the animal’s intent and so its message. In animal magic, coyote does not simply represent some symbolic or generic coyote, for which only one definition applies. A coyote howling is not the same as a coyote rolling in the dirt to rid itself of pests. In one instance communication is the key, while the other suggests that one should eliminate from oneself anything that is unnecessary or detracts from quality of life.
When it comes to myths and legends, there are many interpretations for a given species. Consider crow, often thought of as ‘vermin’: the Seminole Indian, for whom it was the stealer of corn, would have agreed with this assessment. Elsewhere, though, crow is the creator god of the tribes of northwestern America and the bringer of wisdom and truth of Norse mythos.
When seeking meaning in an animal’s sudden appearance in your life, find out as much as possible about the species and its related legends. Always view the animal in context. If crow came to you in a dream, what precisely was crow doing? If it was running away with an ear of corn in its mouth, then maybe the Seminole interpretation applies, but if it was observed sitting upon the scales of justice then it bears quite another message altogether.
Native legends state that man learned from animals how to live, and who could debate this fact that animals created before man would have been our teachers? The lessons animals have to give us are as important now as they were then, perhaps even more so. If an animal has appeared in your life, be thankful and follow the path upon which it leads joyfully.
