THE TRIMESTERS OF LIFE (June 2008)

Those of you who read my monthly musings in the Cygnus Review know that my ordinary life is continually coloured and enriched by the everyday events, news and inspirations shared with family and friends. The hopes and dreams we hold are given substance and expansion by being able to share them. Sharing in another’s experience is a manifold blessing, possible of sparking past memories of our own or perhaps a feeling of companionship, as if it were our own. Conversation becoming a catalyst. One brave comment of personal revelation can be all that is needed to assist another. Pleasure and pain, shared in empathy are both capable of unification. With that belief, and certainly with gratitude to those who have shared personal stories with me, I would like to share my exciting family news with you.

Dreams can become reality
Some of my most challenging and rewarding insights have been revealed through personal relationships, none more so than with my children, two spirited daughters! Bless them! Despite the inevitable distractions, achievements and disappointments of life, each of them has kept alive their own personal dream. And in this year – as we hold the figure of 8 close to our belief that within the circle of life, dreams can become reality, wishes can come true – Katie is to achieve her deep desire of becoming a midwife – meaning ‘with woman’ – and Karen is to become a mother – one of the precious gifts of womanhood.

For me, sharing their joy is a privilege.

Doesn’t life have such a knack for bringing events together just at the right moment! Overlapping lives, mirroring experiences from different perspectives. With many miles between them, I wonder if my new grandchild will be delivered by its Auntie. Unlikely, and yet, as we know: in life, anything is possible.

However, the news set me thinking: could life within the womb be reflected by life on earth, after birth?

Pregnancy is measured by three trimesters, or stages of development, the first three months seeing the process of physical tissue coming into form as a recognisable human being, quietly laying foundations for the future, preparing a body that’s purpose will be to hold the incoming soul.

The second trimester will see further development, movement and expansion into the safety of protected surroundings, and yet always gently encouraged to grow, develop and quicken into making itself known, its presence felt.

Ultimately, within the third trimester, under a pressure that cannot be denied, we take the final step, leaving the familiar and facing the unknown future, guided towards the light that will dawn as we are delivered into a new way of existence.

All the preparations of body and soul culminated to aid our journey into human life: separations and connection are one.

After birth, our lives mirror that amazing journey. Childhood echoes the first trimester.

All experience is new, innocence informs the infant. We play, move freely without too much restriction, have fun, and explore our position within the family and surroundings of this brave new world. We lay foundations upon which we will build a future life.

The search for meaning
From puberty onwards, we enter the second trimester; our understanding deepens, we question all that has gone before, challenging boundaries and rightly so, developing our individuality, blossoming as we manifest and discover personal gifts. We look for the meaning of life and bring into awareness the truth of spirit in existence. Flesh and spirit are linked together. Understanding the process of spiritual development takes time and often patience, as well as courage to continue the search for meaning. Like the child in the womb, we in life are always responding to the undercurrent of divine wisdom that swells and seduces us to follow the potential of what a life can bring, to acknowledge the bounty and rich fullness of just being alive, to honour and live a life with potential, rather than observe from behind the distortion of clouded vision.

Entering the third trimester we are propelled into a truth that cannot be denied. Light illuminates all knowing and we touch the boundary to which all human life must travel, to go beyond the mirror of reflection and grasp the hand that extends to us eternal love. This is the loving abundance that each one of us holds within, brought back to life by our commitment to share with others this eternal blessing. The human longing is dissolved and we have evolved. Living within the fullness of life is to be, and have, abundance. No more requests are necessary: gratitude brings all the gifts we could ever have imagined.

The journey home
Birth happens as we come ‘to term’, the womb gives up her miracle and the journey continues. Re-birth happens as we come ‘to terms’ with reality, that we are the miracle of life itself, of knowing who we truly are. The journey home is internal, encouraged by the external and never ended – just transformed.

Birthing and re-birthing both respond to loving guidance, be it of the welcoming hands extended by the vigilant midwife, or the unseen hands that enfold us from conception to completion. Extending human hands and hearts, sharing human touch, reminds each cell within our body to work together for the benefit of all, give up the lock and search for the key that brings the ultimate truth.

Living life with purpose and dedication, service and gratitude may just make a dream come true, a celebration in which we all can share, transforming the ordinary, becoming extraordinary.

Thank you for listening, caring and sharing part of my life and thoughts, but of course, life until we are delivered, will always thankfully remain a glorious mystery.

With love, the energetic vibration of life,
Mary
